Device compatibility

RocketPhonics runs on modern phones and tablets. Here's what we officially support, and our recommendations for the best learning experience.

Minimum requirements

iOS (iPhone + iPad)

• iOS 14 or newer
• Any iPhone from iPhone 6s (2015) onwards
• Any iPad from iPad Air 2 (2014) onwards
• Works on iPad mini, standard iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro
• 200 MB of free storage for the app + one chapter downloaded

Android

• Android 11 or newer
• 3 GB of RAM minimum; 4 GB recommended
• 200 MB of free storage
• Works on phones and tablets — the UI scales up gracefully

Browser (parent portal only)

• The parent portal at rocketphonics.com works in any modern browser: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge
• The learning app does not run in the browser — please use the iOS or Android app for your child's lessons

What we recommend

An iPad or Android tablet in the 9–11" range is the best experience. Here's why:

• The lesson UI is designed with a tablet-sized target area in mind.
• Small fingers hit targets more reliably on a larger screen.
• Shared-device use (one child then another) is easier to hand off.
• Longer battery life than a phone.

A phone works fine, especially for quick 5-minute practice sessions on the go.

What's not supported

• iOS 13 and earlier — we can't update these anymore due to Apple SDK changes.
• Android 10 and earlier — older Android versions drop too many required OS features.
• Chromebooks running Android apps — sometimes works, but not officially supported; audio routing is inconsistent.
• Amazon Fire tablets — we're working on Fire support but it's not live yet.
• Windows or Mac desktops — no native app. The parent portal works in the browser; the child app does not.
• Jailbroken or rooted devices — we can't guarantee behavior, and some security features disable our auth flow.

Screen and audio

• The app uses landscape or portrait automatically — your child can rotate freely.
• We recommend wired headphones for clearest phoneme playback, especially during blending lessons where vowel sounds need to be heard crisply.
• Bluetooth works but can introduce a small audio lag — fine for general use, noticeable if you're doing side-by-side call-and-response.

Accessibility

• All text supports iOS Dynamic Type and Android font-size settings.
• VoiceOver (iOS) and TalkBack (Android) are supported on the parent portal. The lesson UI has partial screen-reader support — we're extending this in future releases.
• A high-contrast mode lives at Settings → Accessibility.
